The Dead Sea Scrolls: Conjectures

I am prompted to make these following comments resulting from my reading of the January 2010 issue of Smithsonian, “Who Wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls?” by Anthony Lawler. I will not treat the title question of who wrote the scrolls or where or when they originated…there is much information available on those questions and there is much contention on those questions. Rather, I shall make comment on the following questions:

• Do the scrolls have any significant linkage to the cult of the Essenes , an ascetic cult believed to have inhabited locations near where the scrolls were found ?
• How did the scrolls come to be deposited in caves on the western edge of the Dead Sea?


To the first question, I argue there is no evidence that the Essenes had a role to play in either the origin of the scrolls or of their deposit in the caves. The only nearby known ancient human habitat in the vicinity of the scroll caves is a hill-top excavation known as Qumran.

Some scholars believe the Qumran site contains the ruins of a perfume factory; others think it was the site of a wealthy estate or, even, a fort. From the Smithsonian: “Two millenia ago, there was a thriving commercial trade in the region; numerous settlements dotted the shore, while ships plied the sea. Springs and runoff from the steep hills were carefully

engineered to provide water for drinking and agriculture, and date palms and plants produced valuable resins used in perfume. And while the heavily salinated sea lacked fish, it provided salt and bitumen, the substance used in ancient times to seal boats and mortar bricks. Far from being a lonely and distant community of religious nonconformists, Qumran was a valuable piece of real estate—a day’s donkey ride to Jerusalem, a two-hour walk to Jericho and a stroll to docks and settlements along the sea.”

Thus, the argument that Qumran was an ascetic Essenes commune is subject to question. And when I consider the location of the caves and their accessibility…see below…I have additional reason to doubt a linkage of the Essenes to the caves and their scrolls.

To the second question, I argue that the scrolls were placed in the caves by agents of the Temple priesthood to safeguard them from the ravages of the Roman army.

From Wikipedia: “The first Jewish Revolt began in the year 66 initially because of Greek and Jewish religious tensions but grew with anti-taxation protests and attacks upon Roman citizens….By the summer of 70, the Romans had breached the walls of Jerusalem, ransacking and burning nearly the entire city. … The Temple was destroyed on 30 July 70.”

Thus, I conjecture that the priesthood, fearing for the preservation of the holy Torah and its antecedents (i.e., the historic scrolls dating back to 150 BCE), making every effort to safeguard these sacred objects from certain destruction, had them removed to a site far from Roman forces. It’s obvious they were placed with care… note the pottery containing one of the scrolls…with the thought of retrieval at some future time. I also find it relevant that one of the scrolls was scripted on copper and listed many gold and silver objects assumed taken from the Temple.

Had the priesthood not taken such measures, the fate of the holy scriptures might well have suffered the scene depicted here: Titus’ triumphal procession displaying the treasures (including the Menorah) of the Jewish Temple to the Roman people.

Finally, it is an historical irony that two millenia later, Torah scrolls were again removed from their sanctuaries; this time in advance of Nazi hordes. Someone once said, “The past is not dead; it’s here now and in the future”…some of the rescued scrolls now reside in temples in the United States. — Ellis Katz

WHEN THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT IS STUDIED AND TODAY IS NOT

We, the learning in retirement members of our enjoyable Sage Society, have many diverse interests that challenge our curriculum committee to regularly present a balanced agenda.

But it often puzzles me that so many choices offered relate to the past: past history, literature of the past, music and art of the past. Yes, many interesting topics are offered as well, but because so many our members are so intelligent and well versed in so much, I continually wonder why most of the classes offered are not about the important issue of today. This surely must be science–the sciences of everything could dominate the agenda!

Science can not only be difficult, it can also be depressing. It is, indeed, an inconvenient truth to get people to understand the earth science that is needed to help this planet begin to heal the slights of human overuse.

To vent my angst I offer this to my SAGE friends who are apt to give a rebuttal.

Earthʼs Anger

Call a God anything you want
But know this:
Gaia is good and mad

Sheʼs shaking our planet
Like crazy

Breathing on the pristine white
Top and bottom of us as the innocent
Polar mother loses sight of her cub

As cows she never made
Eat grass where the forests she made
Became furniture for
People sheʼs so sorry she made
Sheʼs got them
Knocking each other out

With words of advanced killing weaponry
Taken from the soil where her microcosms
Know enough to keep things even
Some will call it like Noahʼs ark
After the bombs and bashing
Finish thinning us out

Hope that she has no idea of
Daring an asteroid
To do the clean up
Because sheʼs so dam mad
At this age of stupid

SAGE Rides the Rails to Watts Towers, Mama’s Hot Tamales

SAGE-at-Metro

Using public transportation, members of SAGE rode the rails Saturday, October 24, on their journey to visit the historic Watts Towers.

Boarding the Red Line at the North Hollywood Station, the group traveled to Seventh Street Metro Center where they transferred to the Blue Line. Instead of taking this train to the end of the line in Long Beach, intrepid travelers disembarked at the 103rd Street Station for a short walk to the towers.

At the towers they were greeted by guide James Janisse, a radio personality on local public stations. Janisse, who grew up in the Watts community, recounted stories of visiting the towers during his youth. As he led the SAGE group through an inside tour of the towers, he informed them about Simon Rodia and the builder’s 33-year-project. Following the tour, the group viewed a 12-minute video about Rodia and the towers.

The group also viewed the art gallery with its 50th Anniversary display of paintings, drawings, and sculptures.

Following the visit the SAGE travelers boarded the train back to MacArthur Park where they had colorful lunch at Mama’s Hot Tamales. Mama herself, Sandy Romero, told of her efforts to improve the neighborhood and train young people in restaurant work. –Reuben Allen

Lunch was at the Hot Tamale cafe, which is next to MacArthur Park and Lake. Remember? That is the place where there was all the police brutality, not so long ago. Well, now, the arrests this year have gone to zero from a high a year or so ago of 500. The owner of the cafe has been instrumental in getting the cart vendors to learn to open more legitimate businesses. She even trains some of the younger people for jobs at Starbucks. The buffet was magnificent and the hibiscus tea was a real hit. What a treat to hear about the local success story. Darlene Wilson

Memorable trip. It was so much more than we expected. How fortunate to have a great guide to better understand what we saw, its history, how it was created. Our friends will be a little envious of us as we regale them of not only what we saw but also how we felt.

I was born in Los Angeles in the year that Sam Rodia began this remarkable project, and this trip fulfilled my desire to see it and be at one with it.
Fearful that it would be too much of a trip for the very elderly, you not only made us feel comfortable with our slow pace, it but successful enough to want to take another of your tours. Our appreciation of your efforts, your planning and your watchfulness cannot be expressed loudly enough. Thanks so very much.

Thank you, Zel and Reuben for getting the Watts Towers trip together. It was fulfilling and a long time wish realized for me. Simon Rodia–a dedicated man with a purpose in mind. My father, Anthony Mion, was a cement finisher and terrazzo worker, an immigrant from Italy, so I was especially interested in Rodia’s masterpiece. The colored glass and decorative pottery were brought to life in the California sun. The overall shape of the towers into a ship was breathtaking. What touched my heart most was the honor Rodia gave to his work tools by imbedding the shapes of the small hammer, pliers, trowel, etc. into the cement. –Rita Thayer

A Skeptic Considers His Jewish Origins

I am submitting this “essay” to the SAGE BLOG…believing that our members are given to question even the most certain of all “facts.” I shall be interested to hear other views on this subject.

Some years ago, while reading the second book of the Jewish Bible, Exodus, I came across the words, “Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.” At that time, I was interested in the story of the Egyptian pharaoh, Akhenaten, his religious revolution, and his founding of a new capital, Amarna on the Nile. I had learned that, soon after his early death, the previously displaced priesthood obliterated all traces of his capital and his revolution.

The question then arose: “What happened to the priests and people of Amarna?” This note is my conjectural response to that question. It is not intended as a scholarly article…no references or attributions are included…but I have made a sincere effort to present a factual background to the premise I present. Several of the underlying historical bases are given below:

Hammurabi (1810 – 1750 BC): was the first king of the Babylonian Empire, extending Babylon’s control over Mesopotamia by winning a series of wars against neighboring kingdoms. Hammurabi is known for the set of laws called Hammurabi’s Code, one of the first written codes of law in recorded history. These laws were placed in a public place so that all could see. The code contained 282 laws, written on 12 tablets. The structure of the code is very specific, with each offense receiving a specified punishment.

The punishments tended to be harsh by modern standards, with many offenses resulting in death, disfigurement, or the use of the “Eye for eye, tooth for tooth” philosophy. Putting the laws into writing was important in itself because it suggested that the laws were immutable and above the power of any earthly king to change. The code is also one of the earliest examples of the idea of presumption of innocence, and it also suggests that the accused and accuser have the opportunity to provide evidence. However, there is no provision for extenuating circumstances to alter the prescribed punishment.

Pharaoh Akhenaten (1350 – 1334 BC): (also known as Amenhotep IV) founded a new religion dedicated to the worship of the Aten (the “sun god”). To establish his new faith, he abandoned Thebes, (the old capital), and built a new capital, Amarna, about 190 miles south of Cairo.

Before Akhenaten, the placing of one god in a privileged position never threatened the existence of the remaining gods. The one and the many had been treated as complementary throughout Egyptian history and gods were not mutually exclusive. The Aten, however, was made the only god. The transformation became visibly apparent because of the unparalleled persecution of traditional gods, above all, Amun.* Akhenaten stonemasons swarmed the country and even abroad to remove the name of Amun from all accessible monuments, including even the tips of obelisks, under the gilding on columns and in the letters of the achieves (In fact, Egyptologists use these erasures and later restorations of the name of Amun in order to date monuments to the period before Amarna).

Though Amun felt the worst of the Akhenaten revolution, other gods were also eliminated. He also fought bitterly against the powerful priests who attempted to maintain the worship of the old gods. A new religious literature also arose. This blossoming of culture, however, did not continue after Akhenaten’s death. His son-in-law, Tutankhamen, abandoned Amarna, moved the capital back to Thebes and restored the old polytheistic religion. In the third year of Tutankhamun’s reign (1331 BC), when he was still a boy at the age eleven and probably under the influence of two older advisors (Akhenaten’s vizier Ay and perhaps Nefertiti), the ban on the old pantheon of deities and their temples was lifted, the traditional privileges were restored to their priesthoods, and the capital was moved back to Thebes.

amarnaAmarna Letters (14th century BC): written to Egyptian pharaohs in a time of unrest in Canaan, are an archive of correspondence on clay tablets, mostly diplomatic, between the Egyptian administration and its representatives in Canaan and Amurru in the New Kingdom. Abdi-Hiba, governor of Jerusalem, wrote numerous letters to the pharaoh beseeching Egyptian aid against the encroaching Habiru, if the country [i.e., Canaan] were to be saved for Egypt:

    The Habiru plunder all lands of the king.
    If archers are here
    this year, then the lands of the king,
    the Lord, will remain; but if the archers are not here,
    then the lands of the king, my lord, are lost.

The Habiru: When the Tell el-Amarna archives were translated, some scholars eagerly equated these Habiru with the Biblical Hebrews. Besides the similarity of their spellings, the description of the Habiru attacking cities in Canaan seemed to fit, loosely, the Biblical account of the conquest of that land by Hebrews under Joshua or even by names with David’s Hebrew rally against Saul. However, other scholars assert that the Hebrews were actually spelt as IBRI in Egyptian, however the fact that the Egyptian script was a consonant-only script makes this conjecture unlikely.

Scholarly opinion remains divided on this issue. Some scholars still think that the Habiru were a component of the later peoples who inhabited the kingdoms ruled by Saul, David, Solomon and their successors in Judah and Israel. There have also been theories relating the Habiru to the Biblical personages of Eber and Abraham. While some scholars agree that the genealogies traced from Abraham are based on cultural beliefs and are without historical foundation, there are some who feel that perhaps Eber represents an etymological link to the Habiru.

The Babylonian Exile: In 586 BC, Nebuchadnezzar II captured Jersusalem, destroyed its Temple, and deported its leaders and most of its population to Babylon. At the time, the Babylonian Empire was the most powerful state in the ancient world stretching from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea. They had a system of gods, each with a main temple in each of its cities. The chief gods were Anu, god of heaven; Enlil, god of the air; and Enki or Ea, god of the sea. Others were Shamash, the sungod; Sin, the moon-god; Ishtar, goddess of love and war; and Adad, the storm-god.

Babylonian literature was mainly dominated by mythology and legends. Among these was a creation myth written to glorify their god Marduk. According to this myth, Marduk created heaven and earth from the corpse of the goddess Tiamat. Another work was the Gilgamesh Epic, a flood story written about 2000 BC. Scientific literature of the Babylonians included treatises on astronomy, mathematics, medicine, chemistry, botany, and nature. And, as noted above, the Empire was governed by a set of laws: The Hammurabi Code. This period saw the emergence of scribes and sages in the Jewish leadership and the addition of prophetic books of the Bible. The period also saw the emergence of the central role of the Torah in the life of the Jews.

torahThe Torah: There is evidence that the Pentateuch [five books of Moses] was written over the course of several centuries (900 -500 BC) and that the final version, including the prophets and psalms, came into existence some time after the Exile. The Torah’s account of the Exodus, therefore, was of biblical events that had transpired many centuries earlier and had been transmitted orally from one generation to the next.

My Premise:
There is evidence that, with the early demise of Akhenaten (however it may have happened), the old priesthood and succeeding Pharaohs made every effort to eradicate all traces of Amarna and of Akhenaten. What then, might we imagine would have happened to the Amarna priesthood and it’s followers? My premise is that, pursued by its enemies, it may have been enslaved, but eventually fled north, entered the land of Canaan [now Israel], warred with and intermarried with the indigenous people, and founded the early Hebrew religion…a religion based on principles derived from Amarna [monotheism and circumcision] and intermixed with the myths and legends of Mesopotamia. It is worth noting that the time period and ancient references to the “Habirus” is not inconsistent with the exodus of the ancient Hebrews.

The Amarna “exodus” would not likely have brought a set of written laws to their new land; there is no evidence of a set of laws applying to the Egyptians in the Amarna period …after all, the pharaohs were considered “gods”…their decrees were law. But, as noted above, there was a set of laws (Hammurabi’s Code) applying to Canaan as part of the Babylonian empire.

When Nebuchadrezzar captured Jerusalem in 598 BC, destroying both the city and the Temple, he deported most of its leaders and a sizable portion of the Jewish population to Babylon. Some biblical scholars believe it was during this exile, that the first books of the Torah (Bible) were written and some agree that the final version was completed during that time. Thus it is possible that the Hebrew scribes melded ancient Babylonian beliefs and laws with the oral history of the Exodus to create the Torah.

A final note: There is no evidence that the indigenous people of Canaan practiced monotheism and/or circumcision; in contrast, there is evidence that Akenhanen and his followers did. This would seem to support the premise. The optional case is…that God told Abraham [Genesis 17] “You shall be circumcised through the flesh of your foreskin…this shall be the mark of the covenant between me and you”… and [Deuteronomy 5] that “Thou shall have no other gods before me.”

Moses and Monotheism

mosesIt was first published in 1939. In it, Freud argues that Moses was actually an Ancient Egyptian and in some way related to Akhenaten, an ancient Egyptian monotheist. The book was written in three parts and was a departure from the rest of Freud’s work on psychoanalytic theory. The book does contain discussion of Freud’s psychoanalytic thinking but was intended as a work of history.

In Moses and Monotheism, Freud contradicts the Biblical story of Moses with his own retelling of events claiming that Moses only led his close followers into freedom and that they subsequently killed Moses in rebellion either to his strong faith or to circumcision. Freud explains that years after the murder of Moses, the rebels formed a religion which promoted Moses as the Saviour of the Israelites. Freud said that the guilt from the murder of Moses is inherited through the generations; this guilt then drives the Jews to religion to make them feel better. Most historians since the 1960’s reject the legitimacy of Psychohistory including Freud’s theories.

Joseph and His Brothers

mann2 Published over the course of 16 years, Mann’s work retells the familiar stories of Genesis, from Jacob to Joseph (chapters 27-50). Mann considered it his greatest work. Abraham is repeatedly presented as the man who “discovered God” (a Hanif, or discoverer of monotheism). Jacob as Abraham’s heir is charged with further elaborating this discovery. Joseph is surprised to find Akhenaten on the same path (although Akhenaten is not the “right person” for the path), and Joseph’s success with the pharaoh is largely due to the latter’s sympathy for “Abrahamic” theology.

Such a connection of (proto-)Judaism and Atenism had been suggested before Mann, and notably just before Mann began work on the tetralogy’s forth part by Sigmund Freud in his Moses and Monotheism (1939), although here Akhenaten is postulated as a contemporary of Moses (whereas the usual postulate concerning the contemporary pharaoh of Moses, also adopted by Thomas Mann in his novella Das Gesetz (1944), is Ramesses II).

Tell Us about Your Classes

THE SECRET IN THE CELLAR

For how many years has a certain time honored tenet of SAGE been ignored?
It’s not “Please tell, don’t read, your research information.”
It’s not “The dog ate my outline.”

It’s the need to let the curriculum committee know a first, second and third choice of classes you would like to take. It’s coordinators sometimes accepting more than 15 people, the curriculum committee going soft because members have stubbornly ignored directions.
This means that those who submitted a subject for study and those who wanted it will see a class has failed class for lack of  enrollments.

Is it fair to hold SAGE hostage by saying classes other than a first choice are not worthwhile topics, as if members in a class have no  influence on how well a class can be  valuable to learning?

Once there was a solution for signups that tempt over enrollment: Offer that class to be available again for the next session.
Is there a solution for consideration of our learning in retirement society to be a more learning to be considerate group?

LUMOSITY, MEMORY, AND FREE RICE

Like other SAGE members I know what a good diet is and often bring cookies with bran in them, but it is beginning to take some courage for me to join in discussions when a word, a name, or a number I want to use but has disappeared.

When I lament this to others some will say it’s normal aging and tell me to read Gary Small’s book, The Memory Bible.
I did. It made me feel dumb.

“Lumosity”, yes that’s how it’s spelled, is created by Stanford scientists and it can drive me crazy, but my scores are getting higher with speed, cognition and recognition so I will  persist.

Free rice is wonderful, letting a player go back and try again in geography, great paintings, 4 languages, arithmetic, algebra and world capitols.

WE’RE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN!

For over 20 years the SAGE Society has stressed the fact that people are never too old to learn. Members in their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s are quite mentally alert and have stretched their minds by participating in study groups exploring all facets of literature, science, history, politics, culture, music, art, religion, and current events.

With this SAGE Society Blog we are embarking on a new learning adventure involving a new form of communication. In other words, we oldsters want to keep up with what’s new.  We don’t want to be left behind. Almost all of our 150 members are on the internet and have email addresses.

When SAGE took its initial formative steps to become a learning-in-retirement organization in 1987, there were no blogs. That didn’t happen until the 1990’s. Now we want to be part of the action by sharing our wealth of experience and information with each other and the world.

One form of communication we currently possess is our organization’s website at http://exlweb.csun.edu/sage that gives a comprehensive picture of SAGE and its activities.
